Asphalt Shingles
Made from layers of asphalt and fiberglass materials with a granulated surface. There are several types of asphalt shingles including 3-Tab, Dimensional and Laminate. There are many styles of dimensional shingles from single laminate inexpensive shingles to multi laminate heavy duty shingles made to look like wood shake or slate. Asphalt shingles come with roof warranties from 20 to 50 years or lifetime. They are tested to withstand wind up to 130 MPH depending on the type and style.
Cedar Shakes
Wood roofs will last 20 to 35 years depending upon the thickness, quality and exposure to weather. In some areas moisture combined with freeze thaw cycles can cause the wood to deteriorate within 10 to 15 years. Regular maintenance will greatly extend the life of a wood shake roof. A wood shake tune-up consists of replacing the weather damaged shakes, sealing around flashing and problem areas. Many insurance companies and some local municipalities now require a fire barrier be installed under wood shake.
